Not to mention the snow consitions are so variable (hard-packed vs. soft-powder). The most important thing is that your poles aren't grossly short or grossly long. A More Detailed Way to Determine Pole Length

  1. Place your arms at your sides and hold your elbows at a 90 degree angle.
  2. Make sure that your upper arms are touching your sides, and your lower arms are out in front of you, as if you were holding ski poles.
  3. Make a fist as if you were gripping imaginary ski poles.
  4. Measure the distance from the top of your thumb to the floor.

The measurement that you come up with in step #4 is the length of your ski poles. It is important to add two inches to this length, because the combination of your ski boots and skis will make you slightly taller.

Other Considerations

Novice to intermediate skiers: If you are between sizes, go longer. A longer pole will help keep your body in better balance and allow you to put your weight on the proper ski easier.

Advanced skiers, expert skiers and racers: If between sizes, you may go shorter. This is due to the aggressive stance which is normally lower than intermediates.

When in doubt, always go longer. Many poles can be cut down in length by removing the grip and cutting the shaft. Poles can't be made longer!
